Is the HVAC system in your 5th Gen Elco not switching modes, and seems to be stuck blowing only out of  the “Floor/Defrost” vents?

If you know you have good Vacuum going to the Dash Control Head, the problem is likely the Mode-Select Vacuum Valve that is in the Control Head. The internal surface of the plastic valve gets scarred and pitted from decades of exposure to dust and grit, which adversely affects the performance of the valve. There’s a Rubber Washer with molded passages on it that correspond to the different modes. When the mating surface to this washer gets worn, it creates Vacuum Leaks within the valve, and the valve cannot properly supply vacuum to the Mode Actuators.

This Leak Repair Kit contains computer-cut, 8 mil thick “Repair Surface Overlays” that cover up the scratches and pits, giving the Valve Body a fresh, smooth surface for the Rubber Washer to seal against. There is also a “Shim Overlay” that goes behind the Rubber Washer to slightly increase the compression of the Washer against the sealing surface another 8 mil, also helping to improve the seal between the parts.

This repair kit also includes (9) pieces of shrink tubing for the Vacuum Ports on the Valve Body in the event that the Vacuum Harness Connector ports have stretched and will not seal properly to the Valve Port posts. There is also a small lock insert for the center Retainer Pin that helps keep the two legs on the pin engaged with the valve. If this pin breaks, a small screw and locking nut may be used in its place to hold the valve together.

Although this kit is not a permanent “40-year” fix, it is a simple, low-cost, DIY-Repair alternative to replacing the valve with a pricey new one… that’s IF you can find one! These valves have been discontinued for some time and the N.O.S. ones that may be found are definitely not anywhere near this inexpensive!

It does NOT INCLUDE the Mode-Select Valve, the Rubber Passage Washer, the Center Retainer Pin, Star Spring Washer, any other hard part of the Control Head or the Head itself! This kit is intended to restore the surface inside of the valve to reduce the vacuum leaks.
